The Grammys: 2009

After 14 years or more of sitting in the audience, for the last two years I've watched the Grammys in the comfort of my own home. While I missed the hob-nobbing with my colleagues, (not the long lines trying to find my limo driver after the show) it gave me a chance to see the show as regular viewer and not an industry insider. Kudos first to the Academy for pulling together some stellar performers, including the last minute replacement for Chris Brown (we'll discuss some other time). I do think, however, the show lacked continuity, due to the lack of a host.

I know "Music's Biggest Night" (as promoted by CBS), wanted to put the emphasis on the music but looking at the show with non industry people, I found myself constantly identifying the performers or presenters. When you have a host he/she will add a little flair to the presenters as well as the winners not to mention, introducing the acts with that "Give it up for...." that only a seasoned host can provide. I know Ryan Seacrest has too many jobs, but Chris Rock, Steve Harvey,or any of the country's hot morning radio personalities would have been good for the show. As of matter of fact for years I wondered why, Rick Dees, the late Frankie Crocker, and a dozen others were never used.... Something the Academy may want to entertain for future telecasts.

Again, I want to commend the Academy for a job overall, well done.
